Like full battery electrics, PHEVs are judged by their electric-only range, but, because they are partially motivated by an ICE, also their fuel once their batteries run out of free electrons. Oh, and like all cars, they must prove their performance compared with their peers, not to mention exhibit traditional attributes like comfort, ride and pricing. Using those parameters as the prime criteria — plus a few more pertaining to specific segments — here is our list of best PHEVs on the market today.
It''ll cruise up to 135 kilometres an hour on battery power alone and, when said lithium-ions are depleted, still ekes out about six-and-a-half litres per 100 kilometres. It handles decently too. Indeed, other than an engine that sounds like the proverbial can of marbles — shaken by a very angry chimp — and the fact that it is perennially short supply, the RAV4 Prime is an absolute standout in the PHEV segment.
The first thing you should know is that the Ramcharger, despite being a plug-in and having a gas-fed internal combustion engine onboard, is not a plug-in hybrid; it''s a range-extended EV. The difference is that while a PHEV — all the other vehicles on this list — can drive the wheels with either the electric or gas motors (or, most often, both simultaneously), the Ramcharger''s wheels are always powered by electricity. When its 92-kilowatt-hour battery runs dry and the 3.6-litre V6 kicks in, it simply acts as a generator to recharge the battery which, in turns, drives the wheels.
On battery power alone, Stellantis says the Ramcharger is good for 230 kilometres, but when the gas engine kicks in, it can extend that range another 890 klicks for more than 1,100 kilometres of combined road-tripping goodness. No one knows how much of that range will be available when towing the 14,000 pounds the Ramcharger is rated for, but, even if it''s half of its rated range, that''s literally miles ahead of the 150 or so kilometres Ford''s F-150 manages when it''s towing a heavy load. If the Ramcharger does prove be that robust, look for it to be a game changer.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon gives a great performance with the 2.0-L turbo-four that sports two electric motors. It delivers 375 horsepower and a full 470 pound-feet of torque. This makes it the most powerful Wrangler ever!
What’s even more thrilling is the 17 kWh lithium-ion battery, which is good for 35 kilometres of electric motoring. It also runs silently and stealthily with the 4xe, which delivers a Tread Lightly off-roading feature. This creates much less disturbance than most off-roading vehicles. The regenerative braking is great for all the stop-and-go that is common with off-roading, making it a great choice for fun and adventure.
Deciding what electric vehicle is the most budget conscious was a difficult choice. The Hyundai Kona and Chevy Bolt both have plenty of perks and benefits. The Kona has a nicer décor and is more luxurious, but the Chevy is definitely not your average ride either. The Bolt provides more legroom and headroom inside, which may appeal to some people over the luxury of the Kona. However, when it comes to cargo space, the Kona has a little bit more space.
As far as the engine performance goes, the Hyundai delivers 201 hp, while the Bolt brings 200 hp. So, they’re basically the same. Both are great choices, so it depends on what you’re looking for.
The upcoming 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is sure to be a head turner and an efficient ride. It’s powered by a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine, which will put out 226 hp. Pick a side. In the red corner, you''ll find hundreds of new vehicles still outfitted with internal combustion engines. In the blue corner, dozens of fully electric vehicles with heaps of battery power. Are you going to make your stops at Shell or a supercharger? Are you going to alert your friends to your environmental stand or show up at the drag strip with a supercharged V8?
Or are you prepared, to find a middle ground? Most Canadians aren''t, to be honest. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) aren''t ruled out of the incentive game the way conventional hybrids are thanks to federal rebates of either $2,500 or even an EV-matching $5,000. Yet while the federal government paid out rebates for 17,563 fully electric vehicles in the first-half of 2022, there were only 10,263 rebates delivered for new plug-in hybrids.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) offer the flexibility of having both electric and hybrid drive modes. PHEVs usually come with a larger battery pack than regular hybrids and can be driven on battery power alone and also be plugged-in to charge the battery like a pure electric car. PHEVs have a moderate ''electric-only'' range that are useful for in-town puttering around and the presence of an internal combustion engine means that there''s no range anxiety to deal with. A win-win.
Twenty different PHEV nameplates were eligible for participation in Canada''s iZEV program through the end of June, but over half of the rebates were collected by just four vehicles. Meanwhile, there were seven vehicles collecting iZEV rebates in 2022 that weren''t on the market a year ago; three others dropped out due to discontinuation.
The criteria for Transport Canada''s Zero-Emissions Vehicle Program was altered — effective April 25, 2022 — to enable higher-priced EVs and PHEVs to participate. The floor was moved up to $55,000; the ceiling for SUVs and trucks was bumped up to $70,000 provided the model line''s base MSRP was below $60,000. With this change, plus the simple fact that many high-priced PHEVs are still ineligible, we can''t say that this is a definitive look at the 10 highest-volume plug-in hybrids in Canada in 2022''s first-half. Moreover, many of these vehicles were ordered way back in 2021 and only delivered — and thus rebated — in 2022.
Nevertheless, as an indicator of where PHEV money is being spent at a host of primarily volume-oriented brands, Transport Canada''s data is far more transparent than the EV/PHEV info from virtually every automaker. These were Canada''s most frequently rebated plug-in hybrids during 2022''s first six months.
Overall, BMW 3 Series sales are down 30 per cent to only 1,564 units in 2022. Based on those figures alone, the plug-in 330e, despite its sub-40-km EV range, is becoming an important component of the 3 Series mix. It certainly doesn''t hurt the 330e''s case that it only costs $2,240 more than a basic 3 Series. Restricted by its small battery, the 330e is only eligible for a $2,500 iZEV rebate.
Preparing for a switch to second-generation form this year, the Kia Niro is the only vehicle on this list available as a conventional hybrid, full electric, or plug-in hybrid. Transport Canada reported 425 Niro EV deliveries in 2022''s first-half. Kia reported 1,203 total Niro sales. Like the 330e, the Niro PHEV is eligible for the minimum $2,500 iZEV rebate.
