STORAGE TO ENABLE LOW-CARBON, RELIABLE, RESILIENT ELECTRICITY

BETHESDA, Md., Dec. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin

GridStar Flow is an innovative redox flow battery designed for large-capacity

BETHESDA, Md., Dec. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) announced today a teaming agreement with TC Energy in which the two companies will identify and develop large-scale, long-duration energy storage projects using GridStar® Flow, Lockheed Martin''s innovative flow battery technology. This cutting-edge energy storage system is capable of storing six to 12 hours or more of energy and dispatching it as needed.

"We are thrilled to be partnering with TC Energy to bring long-duration energy storage to TC Energy projects in North America," said Dan Norton, vice president of Lockheed Martin Energy. "GridStar® Flow provides the durability, flexibility and safety necessary for project success, ensuring that TC Energy can customize systems to fit their needs and operate them for many years."

"We are excited to work with Lockheed Martin on this initiative, which exemplifies TC Energy''s long history of embracing innovation and leading-edge technology in its operations," says Francois Poirier, Executive Vice-President, Corporate Development & Strategy, and President, Power & Storage and Mexico. "This technology also strongly supports our commitments to sustainable development, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the energy value chains."

GridStar® Flow will enable TC Energy to address the growing requirements for large-scale, long-duration batteries to provide flexibility and resiliency as electric grids move away from fossil fuel generation and incorporate increasing levels of intermittent renewable energy.

Unlike conventional batteries, GridStar® Flow allows customers to optimally size power (megawatts) and energy (megawatt hours) independently and maintains its energy capacity without degradation throughout project life.

GridStar Flow is an innovative redox flow battery designed for large-capacity storage applications that stores power generated from renewable energy sources and dispatches it to electric grids during peak demand or unanticipated electricity loss.

Lockheed Martin''s first customer-sited production system is intended as a demonstration unit for the Army and ERDC-CERL. This system will be tested against protocols that simulate microgrid and renewable integration to ensure critical missions can continue in the event of a long-term power outage. It is expected to have a discharge duration of 10 hours.

"Electric grids are undergoing unprecedented change. Energy requirements are shifting as we consider renewable resources coupled with utility-scale, long-duration storage options," said Dr. Andrew J. Nelson, director, CERL. "Solutions to increase resiliency and self-sufficiency are crucial to economically and sustainably supporting DoD operations."

Insights gained from this pilot project could support the deployment of future long-duration storage across all DoD services and installations.

"We are committed to supporting the U.S. Army''s climate strategy to foster modernization and readiness across the force, while seeking out solutions that offer a more secure, sustainable and cleaner future," said Tom Jarvi, Lockheed Martin GridStar Flow program director. "GridStar Flow is designed to meet emerging, long-duration energy storage needs and bolster the necessary grid resilience to combat 21st century security challenges."

Lockheed Martin, ERDC-CERL and the U.S Army plan to break ground on this GridStar Flow project in the fall.

Today''s development follows the recent success of Sinteza in securing a €25 million National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) co-financing funds for the electrolyte that is used in GridStar® Flow large-scale batteries.

The letter of intent was signed by Ray Piselli, Vice President of International Business at Lockheed Martin, and the CEO of Sinteza S.A., Gelu Stan, in the presence of Romanian Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja the U.S Ambassador to Romania, H.E. Kathleen Kavalec.

It establishes a pathway for the parties to begin the development process for a future €50 million factory which will produce 30,000 tons of negative electrolyte per year, starting in the summer of 2026. This will be the world''s largest and first European facility of its kind.

This announcement follows discussions held with Romanian Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja earlier this year in the United States, focused on how the GridStar Flow battery can help Romania achieve its net zero goals.Read more aboutRomania Becomes the 20th Member of the F-35 Global Alliance read more
