California-based battery producer Statevolt plans to manufacture solid-state battery cells in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by the end of 2026. Sister company Statevolt Emirates is preparing to build a 3.2-billion dollar gigafactory in Ras Al Khaimah. With an annual production capacity of up to 40 gigawatt-hours, the project aims to tap into the emerging export markets for battery storage and electric mobility in the Middle East region, including Africa and India. Initially, semi-solid state batteries will be produced.
Statevolt is already building a 54-gigawatt-hour lithium-ion battery gigafactory in California. The companyʼs UAE facility will be built in the Al Ghail Industrial Park in the Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone. The project is expected to create up to 2,500 direct jobs and to significantly contribute to the UAEʼs "Vision 2031" for a "future-oriented economy and society."
The factory built by Statevolt will produce semiconductor battery cells, with the goal to switch to solid-state battery cells when the project reaches full capacity. The project will be built on an area of 60 hectares in the Al Hamra Industrial Zone in RAKEZ and is expected to create up to 2,500 direct jobs.

Despite regional challenges and skepticism, serial gigafactory founder Lars Carlstrom sees untapped potential and strategic advantages in the UAE and Middle East, and worries that Europe is missing a huge opportunity to reindustrialise. With Lucid''s foray into EV production in Saudi Arabia and Ceer''s imminent market entry, is the Middle East primed to embrace electrification?
Regionally, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is not the first place that comes to mind when you hear the term, "electrification." But just last month, Lars Carlstrom, who is seeking to kickstart battery production on a mass scale, announced that his gigafactory company, Statevolt, would be embarking on the construction of a pioneering battery plant in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, called Statevolt Emirates, to the tune of $3.2 billion in capital expenditure.
Daniel Harrison, Automotive Analyst at AMS provides a counterweight to the idea of public funding as the prime mover for enabling electrification. Harrison says: "Whilst it is true that government support for investment in gigafactories is a major factor in their location and viability, it''s not the whole picture.
A groundbreaking project between Hyundai Motor, Kia, Hyundai Steel, and EcoPro BM seeks to advance EV battery production by directly synthesising LFP cathode material, promising reduced emissions, lower costs, and enhanced performance.
GM and Samsung SDI have finalised a $3.5B partnership to build a high-capacity EV battery plant in Indiana, aiming to power future electric vehicles.
