EVLO Energy Storage Inc. (EVLO), a fully integrated battery energy storage system (BESS) provider and wholly owned subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, today announced that it has completed the commissioning of a first utility-scale BESS project in the United States. The contracted 3 MW/12 MWh installation is in Troy, Vermont.

The BESS will store energy during strong energy production times for later use during peak energy demand, helping to smooth out the intermittency of renewable power generation while delivering value to local utility customers.

The Troy project will also provide data to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Sandia National Laboratories to demonstrate how battery storage can enable the expansion of renewable energy production, while further integrating renewables into the New England grid.

The Troy project consists of 16 EVLO 1000 units and four Power Conversion System (PCS) platforms, all managed by the EVLOGIX Energy Management System (EMS). EVLO will monitor and maintain the BESS under a 20-year long-term service agreement, in partnership with Vermont utilities including the Vermont Electric Cooperative, which serves the town of Troy.

This is EVLO’s first BESS project commissioned, installed, and in operation in the U.S., illustrating the expanding importance of battery storage, as well as the company’s growing reach beyond Canada and Europe.

“EVLO is proud to work with pioneering utilities, such as the ones in Vermont, that take action to accelerate the energy transition,” said Sonia St-Arnaud, president and CEO at EVLO. “To effectively increase renewable energy utilization, a robust battery energy storage sector is critical, and we’re proud to share EVLO’s power grid and BESS know-how to this important project, the first of many we currently have in development in the U.S.”

“Our hope is this project will help demonstrate the critical role that battery energy storage can have, empowering us to deliver more reliable and sustainable power to the communities we serve,” said Rebecca Towne, CEO of Vermont Electric Cooperative. “As more renewable capacity comes online, this project is a great example of helping the regional grid through collaboration and innovation.”

In collaboration with EVLO, Hithium also completed the commissioning of the 5MWh, 20-foot DC block on EVLO''s 25kV testing facility. This achievement met the project''s specific requirements and marked a significant milestone as the first grid-connected BESS project in North America that uses Hithium''s 5MWh DC block in a 20-foot container.

As Mizhi Zhang, Hithium President of Global Business added: "The North American market is a strategic priority for Hithium, and we are proud to partner with EVLO because of their commitment to delivering advanced, safe, and cost-effective energy storage solutions, which aligns perfectly with our vision. By delivering comprehensive technical and after-sales support throughout the project lifecycle and extensive warranty coverage up to 25 years, we aim to cultivate local expertise and expand the network in North America. Together, we''re innovating to meet the growing needs of utilities and independent power producers."

"Our collaboration with Hithium has been instrumental in providing a solution that addresses the market''s fast-evolving needs while supporting grid resiliency and accelerating the energy transition," said Sonia St-Arnaud, EVLO President & CEO. "The successful commissioning of EVLO SYNERGY is a pivotal moment for EVLO and the American energy storage industry, demonstrating our integration capabilities and our unique ability to bring groundbreaking systems to operational readiness through real-world testing.''''

The 5MWh DC blocks, based on Hithium''s specialized prismatic 314Ah cells, double length module with IP 67 protection grade, allows for highly efficient use of space in the standard 20-foot container. This increased space efficiency allows for a 40% improvement in project energy density compared to previous generations. This makes the energy transition more affordable and allows asset developers and investors to scale up real, durable, quality BESS projects, thereby making the energy transition genuinely affordable. Furthermore, the product features multi-level and liquid cooling technology, which maintains cell temperature variation below 3°C and enables uninterrupted operation in extreme weather conditions.

Hithium''s exclusive focus on engineering cells for stationary energy storage provides a competitive advantage in the market. This enables the company to offer exceptional longevity, backed by a 25-year warranty. This concentrated strategy enables the company to innovate and create more robust and cost-effective cells, which are perfectly aligned with the needs of stationary energy storage.

MONTRÉAL — EVLO Energy Storage Inc. (EVLO), a fully integrated battery energy storage systems (BESS) provider and wholly owned subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, announces an achievement in its relationship with investor-owned utility Dominion Energy (Dominion) to develop a battery energy storage system (BESS) with enhanced fire and safety features that meet and exceed Dominion’s safety specifications.

UL 9540 certification recognizes BESS safety, reliability and performance across several phases including design, production, testing, installation, and operation. It requires robust functional safety governance, fire prevention and response preparedness, explosion containment provisions, hazard detection sensitivity, and resistance to cascading failures. The UL 9540A testing protocol, leading to the UL 9540 certification, was conducted by independent North American certification agencies.

“We are proud of our team’s success in augmenting EVLOFLEX to meet Dominion’s specific safety requirements,” said EVLO Chief Technology Officer Michel Cousineau. “Through targeted adjustments, we’ve further strengthened EVLOFLEX’s safety features. The integration of an external fire panel control, for example, will facilitate regulatory approval process by authorities having jurisdictions (AHJ). This will benefit both Dominion and future clients seeking for their projects to meet stringent certification standards like NFPA 72.”

EVLOFLEX is designed to help utilities stabilize grids, control flow, and optimize asset operation, and incorporates fire protection solutions at all levels.

“Our collaboration with Dominion Energy is guided by our customer-centric approach and our commitment to deliver products that meet the most stringent safety requirements and provide superior performance” said Sonia St-Arnaud, President and CEO of EVLO. “As a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, North America’s largest renewable energy provider, partnering with utilities is in our DNA. EVLOFLEX enhanced fire and safety version’s recertification of UL 9540 standards demonstrates our unwavering commitment to safety and innovation in the large-scale energy storage sector.”

The EVLOFLEX BESS will be deployed across three large-scale BESS projects in the Commonwealth of Virginia, totalling more than 300 MWh in capacity. The projects align with Dominion’s Grid-Transformation Plan to modernize its infrastructure while maintaining service.

The three Virginia projects are scheduled to begin commissioning in 2025 and 2026. EVLOFLEX’s safety features will also be available in future projects for other EVLO clients with stringent safety standards.
