Hitachi Energy and Svenska kraftnät agree historic multi-million dollar order to provide critical energy infrastructure
8-year framework agreement will provide power transformers and shunt reactors to strengthen the Swedish grid
One of the largest transformer and reactor orders ever for Hitachi Energy''s flagship factory in Ludvika
Hitachi Energy signs a framework agreement with Svenska kraftnät, which carries out major investments to strengthen the existing Swedish electricity grid and enable the ongoing energy transition.
The modernization and expansion of the Swedish main grid is proceeding in full force, with the goal of enabling the electrification of industrial processes, the transport sector and society at large. Electricity use will double by 2045, totalling 300 TWh, according to the government''s goals. But, for this to become reality, extensive investments are required in electricity grid infrastructure such as, transformers and reactors.
The framework agreement includes large power transformers up to 750 MVA and shunt reactors of 400 kV in varying power ranges. The technology will be delivered to Svenska kraftnät''s existing substations for upgrades and to new stations that will be built to meet the increased need for electricity.
This is one of the largest transformer and reactor orders ever for Hitachi Energy''s flagship factory in Ludvika, which is responsible for the supply of the transformers -their design, production and installation. Delivery of the transformers and reactors is planned from 2027 until 2032.
We are very glad and grateful to be a long-term partner to Svenska kraftnät and look forward to delivering our pioneering technology and expertise. We are committed to supporting the energy transition and accelerating Sweden's energy system to become more sustainable, flexible and secure
Tobias HanssonCountry Managing Director of Hitachi Energy in Sweden
Last year, Hitachi Energy signed one of Sweden''s largest export contracts in history and recently the company announced a major investment and expansion of capacity at the flagship plant in Ludvika. This is part of the expansion plan for Hitachi Energy to invest approximately $330 million (3.7 billion SEK) expanding its operations in Sweden across the entire product portfolio and recruiting an additional 2,000 employees by 2027 to support the energy transition.
I am very proud of this record order and our fantastic team at our transformer factory in Ludvika. We are on an incredibly exciting growth journey in Sweden and beyond, with large investments to boost our manufacturing capacity and a great need for recruitment. It is a result of the high transformer demand that we see today with our world-leading technology and competence to enable the clean energy transition

Hitachi Energy has developed world-leading transformers in Sweden, across Europe and the globe for over 100 years and has many ground-breaking innovations. As critical components of the energy system, transformers alter the voltage levels to enable efficient power generation, transmission, and distribution. At the same time, shunt reactors increase the energy efficiency of the power system through reactive power compensation.
Hitachi Energy, headquartered in Switzerland and employing more than 40,000 people in 90 countries, remains focused on leveraging its pioneering technology expertise globally to advancing a sustainable energy future for all.

Svenska kraftnät is a Swedish state-owned enterprise that is assigned by the government to maintain and develop Sweden’s national grid for electricity. Svenska kraftnät has tasked Sweco with completing a comprehensive review and upgrade of the electricity transmission system throughout Sweden. This entails ensuring the reliability of the 16,000 km of overhead lines that make up the backbone of Sweden’s electricity supply. The assignment extends until 2031 and is valued at just over SEK 50 million.
“Svenska kraftnät is now making extensive future investments in the electricity grid and Sweco is proud to be able to assist with multidisciplinary expertise. We support Svenska kraftnät in its long-term efforts to develop and secure the reliability of a robust national grid that secures the supply of electricity and contributes to a more resilient society,” says Ann-Louise Lökholm Klasson, President of Sweco Sweden.
More specifically, the assignment from Svenska kraftnät involves Sweco completing a preliminary study as well as pre-planning and detailed project planning of measures to be taken for a review of the overhead lines throughout Sweden. The assignment also includes geotechnical surveys along the overhead lines. Sweco is participating in these efforts by analysing and compiling input data, and by evaluating the measures to be implemented to ensure that the lines are operationally secure and safe. The assignment began in May 2023 and extends until 2031 and has an order value of just over SEK 50 million.
