In Belgium, we are a major player in the refining, petrochemical, polymer recycling and electric mobility sectors. We also supply natural gas and local green electricity across the country. In Belgium, the Company supports educational projects and initiatives tackling social exclusion, while cooperating with various associations. We are also a loyal partner to a number of major cultural events.
In Belgium, we operate several renewable electricity generating assets, including the Rentel offshore windfarm (as part of a PPA) in the North Sea and the Plate-Taille hydropower plant (usage concession with Sofico for storing the electricity generated by the dam).
We are developing two battery-based electricity storage projects in the country:
With these two projects, our battery electricity storage capacity in Belgium will reach 50 MW/150MWh.
We are also developing solar power plants across the country.
In Belgium, we own an integrated refining and petrochemical complex in Antwerp. This facility is one of the most efficient in Europe.
We also operate the Feluy facility, which produces polymers and houses our R&D activities (OneTech), particularly focusing on catalysts and polymer recycling.
Lastly, we have several petroleum product storage depots.
In Belgium, we supply our business customers with natural gas and electricity, and we offer electric mobility services with charge points and solar panels installed at their sites.
We retail specialty, petroleum and petrochemical products in the country. We also have a network of approximately 570 service stations through a joint venture with Alimentation Couche-Tard, where we retail our fuel and products, and offer related services.
We also operate fast and ultra-fast charge points, mainly along highways, as well as the public network across Belgium, especially in Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. We are also active in the other segments of the electric mobility sector, such as at home, at the office and in private spaces. Lastly, we supply natural gas and local green electricity to our residential customers.

Antwerp: TotalEnergies'' Largest Integrated Complex in Europe
On 4 May 2023 the Energy Storage Coalition, a new organisation aimed at accelerating the decarbonisation of the European energy system by increasing the deployment of sustainable and clean energy storage solutions to support renewables, hosted its launch event, which also provided an opportunity to discuss how the upcoming EU Electricity Market Design can address today''s barriers to the deployment and use of energy storage technologies in Europe.
Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy emphasised that energy storage is key to building a future-proof, resilient and decarbonised energy system and the Energy Storage Coalition is a welcome development and will be an important interlocutor going forward.
Philipp Offenberg, Senior Manager Europe of Breakthrough Energy, reiterated the critical need to have the right policy and investment frameworks in place to drive the deployment and scale of long-duration energy storage technologies.
Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, pointed out that as "last winter, EU renewables generated more electricity than fossil fuels, it''s clear that solar and renewables can power Europe in all seasons. We need strong energy infrastructure to make year-round renewables the norm. That means taking energy storage seriously and getting the grid ready."
Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope, highlighted that "more storage is needed to help ramp up the capacity of wind farms that can connect to the grids, especially at their weakest points. We also need to make sure that each kilowatt-hour (KWh) produced by wind farms can be used to its full potential and in the best way possible. To secure Europe''s energy supply we need to offer system flexibility while reducing to zero our dependence on fossil fuels."
Catharina Sikow-Magny, Director of Green Transition and Energy System Integration at the Directorate General for Energy at the European Commission concluded the event by stating that the European Commission has put in place several legislative changes that can dramatically improve the regulatory framework for energy storage and it is paramount to ensure the swift implementation of such provisions at the Member State level so that energy storage is able to fulfil its key role in the energy system.
The event showcased the growing importance of energy storage in Europe''s energy transition and the role it can play in achieving a sustainable, low-carbon future.

A First Flagship Energy Storage Project in Belgium
After commissioning four battery parks in France offering total energy storage capacity of 130 MWh, this project will be the Company''s largest battery installation in Europe. The batteries, 40 Intensium Max High Energy lithium-ion containers, will be supplied by Saft, the battery subsidiary of TotalEnergies, confirming its position as European leader in industrial-scale stationary storage with this project.
The installation, which will be operational by the end of 2024, will help meet the needs of the European and Belgian high-voltage transmission network 24/7 by:
Essential for the Development of Renewable Energies
TotalEnergies is delighted to develop this storage project, which will compensate for the intermittency introduced by renewable energies and thus enable their development. Batteries are an effective response to the growing need for grid balancing. They can be deployed quickly, have a limited footprint and high reactivity. As a result, they can help meet the new challenges facing power grids today.
This project, located on the Antwerp refinery site, will benefit from the available land and the site''s grid connection. It is a new step in TotalEnergies'' development of battery energy storage systems (BESS) which strengthens the Company''s presence across the entire electricity value chain in Belgium (production, storage, supply).
"This first storage project in Belgium – our largest in Europe – will help ensure the stability of the Belgian and European grids to allow for greater development of renewable energies. It fits in perfectly with the multi-energy strategy of TotalEnergies.
"Backed by Saft''s battery energy storage system expertise, TotalEnergies intends to deploy storage solutions – notably in countries where we are actively developing renewable energies. With its energy storage solutions, TotalEnergies supports the growth of renewable energy production in the European energy mix," said Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President Integrated Power at TotalEnergies.
TotalEnergies and electricity in Belgium
In Belgium, TotalEnergies is a major player in the entire electricity value chain. As an electricity supplier, the company has a portfolio of 450,000 BtC sites and around 100,000 BtB sites. To supply them with energy, TotalEnergies relies in particular on the Marchienne-au-Pont CCGT power plant (430 MW), the Plate-Taille hydroelectric dam (140 MW), and a wind farm located in the Belgian waters of the North Sea (300 MW).
