Off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa, in the Gulf of Guinea, is the Portuguese-speaking island nation of Sao Tomé and Principe, formally known as the Democratic Republic of Sao Tomé and Principe.

It is made up of two archipelagos that are centred on the two main islands of So Tomé and Principe, which are located 250 and 225 kilometres (155 and 140 mi) off the northwestern coast of Gabon and are separated by roughly 150 km (93.21 mi) each.

After the Seychelles, Sao Tomé and Principe is the second-smallest and second-least populous sovereign state in Africa, with a population of 201,800 (2018 government estimate).

It can be run on electricity from extravehicular sources, a collector system, or a battery that powers it on its own (sometimes charged by solar panels, or by converting fuel to electricity using fuel cells or a generator).

Road and rail cars, surface and underwater watercraft, electric aeroplanes, and electric spacecraft are just a few examples of EVs. EVs for road cars are part of a future mobility concept known as Linked, Autonomous, Shared and Electric (CASE) Mobility, which also includes other upcoming automotive technologies including shared mobility, autonomous driving, and connected vehicles.

Sao Tomé and Principe is steadfastly pursuing the energy transition in order to improve the nation’s resilience to external shocks, lessen energy dependence, utilise the full potential of currently available renewable energies, encourage energy efficiency, and support electric mobility.

The Sao Tome and Principe Electric Vehicle Market Accounted for $XX Billion in 2021 and is anticipated to reach $XX Billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of XX% from 2022 to 2030.

Aiways, a Chinese EV manufacturer, will begin doing business in Portugal.

Aiways, a Chinese manufacturer of electric vehicles (EVs), has scheduled the launch of its SUV U5 in Portugal and plans to introduce a second model this year.Astara, the Aiways importer who will also be in charge of after-sales servicing and maintenance, anticipates receiving the first vehicles for delivery.

The launch was originally scheduled for the first quarter, but it was postponed because of Chinese covid-19 limitations that resulted in the quarantining and closure of cities, ports, and other areas.

The SUV U5, which has clean lines and a battery with a practical capacity of 400 kilometres on an urban circuit, is available. The SUV is available for fleets.

A general manufacturing warranty of five years or 150,000 kilometres is included with the Aiways U5 (the batteries also have a warranty of 150,000 kilometres, but up to eight years).

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has been engaged by the United Nations Development Organisation (UNIDO) to assist the Government of São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) to develop a low carbon emissions plan for the country''s Transport Sector.

The agreement, signed by Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice Chancellor of KNUST, and Atushi Isoyama a representative of UNIDO, enables experts at The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre of the College of Engineering, KNUST to work with various stakeholders in STP over ten (10) months. The assignment is jointly implemented with pManifold Ltd of India.

Following the signing of the agreement, a team at The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre and pManifold have been working with agencies of STP''s Ministry of Infrastructure and Natural Resources (MIRN), Ministry of Planning, Finance and Blue Economy (MPFEA) and other stakeholders to lay out an ambitious and yet realistic plan and pathway towards reduction in emissions from the transport sector.

The task includes among others, characterisation of the current fleet in STP, a review of current vehicle importation trends, fuel quality standards, vehicle-related policies, and infrastructure. As part of the agreement, two baseline studies will be produced, one on fuel economy and another on electric mobility. This will be followed by a roadmap for the adoption of measures for improved fuel economy and the uptake of electric mobility on the island. Fuel quality and emissions standards will also be developed as part of the task. The team will also provide training for key institutions and stakeholders in STP.
