RAG''s energy storage facilities are highly versatile. Their wide range of capabilities contributes to securityof supply in Austria and Europe, and they hold the key to a sustainable energy future. Large volumes of gaseous energy sources can be stored here. Currently used primarily for traditional natural gas,in future they will also store green gas such as hydrogen, for withdrawal at high capacity and at any time.

As a gas storage facility operator our missionis the storage of gaseous energy sources and the utilization of storage facilities for sustainable energy storage.

With more than 6.3 billion cubic metres (bn cu m) of gas storage capacity RAG Austria AG is Austria''s largest energy storage company and one of Europe''s leading storage operators. RAG operates around 6% of total gas storage capacity in the EU.50% of our gas reservoirs have been converted into gas storage facilities. Therefore, we makea major contribution to security of supply in Austria and Central Europe.

Use of underground natural gas reservoirs is the safest and most efficient way of stockpiling energy. Austria has geological structures that are ideal for gas storage.

New supplies can be stored in these formations, where gas accumulated naturally over millions of years, at depths of more than 1,000 metres. These former gas fields originated over 20 millionyears ago, when organic matter in the primeval oceanthat occupied today''s Prealps was trapped by sandstone sediments.Over time, gas built up in the pores of the sandstone, forming gas reservoirs that can cover an area of several square kilometres. Clay strata several hundred metres thick overlie the gas reservoirs, and this natural insulating layer makes them an extremely safe means of underground storage. The proof of this comes from nature itself, since the original gas reserves were heldthere for millions of years.

Natural gas is produced throughout the year, at roughly constant rates. Austria''s imports are transported along pipelines and as LNG cargoes from producing countries. The amount of gas consumed by industry, power stations and households varies according to the season and time of day. Demand is much higher in winter than in summer, and more gas is used during the day than at night. Gas must be stored to ensure that it is available when needed. Storage injections and withdrawals in recent years have shown that withdrawal periods are lengthening, and that in future RAG''s storage facilities will be required to provide even more flexibility.

Efficient and reliable energy storage systems are central building blocks for an integrated energy system based 100% on renewable energy sources. Innovative storage technologies and new fields of application for the use of energy storage systems are being researched and demonstrated in practical operations as part of national and international research and development activities.

Large-volume storage of hydrogen enables energy transition while maintaining security of supply. With "Underground Sun Storage", the world''s first hydrogen storage facility in an underground porous reservoir, RAG Austria AG – Renewables and Gas – and its project partners are setting new international standards.

Two years after the start of the project, the underground sun storage facility was opened on April 27, 2023.

In this unique cross-sector demonstration facility, solar energy is converted into green hydrogen by water electrolysis and stored in pure form in an underground natural gas reservoir in Gampern, Upper Austria. The scale of the storage corresponds to the summer surplus of about 1,000 photovoltaic systems on family homes. In summer, this surplus energy is stored and in winter the green energy can be provided again in the form of electricity and heat.

"In Gampern in Upper Austria we are demonstrating what is possible and necessary to ensure a secure supply of green energy throughout the year and thus enable the energy transition.", Mitteregger emphasizes.

In the lead project "Underground Sun Storage 2030" (USS 2030), the safe, seasonal and large-scale storage of renewable energy in the form of hydrogen in underground gas reservoirs is being developed. In addition, all partners involved in the project will jointly gain valuable technical and economic knowledge for the development of a secure hydrogen supply.

In this research project, the only one of its kind in the world, renewable solar energy is converted into green hydrogen in a climate-neutral way by means of electrolysis and stored in a pure form in former natural gas reservoirs. Until 2025, interdisciplinary technical-scientific investigations for the energy future will be carried out under real conditions at a small former natural gas reservoir in the municipality of Gampern (Upper Austria) under the leadership of RAG Austria AG together with the project partners. A customised research facility will be built for this purpose.
