Hydrogen is emerging as one of the leading options for storing and potentially transporting energy from renewables over long distances. Uzbekistan set a 25 percent target for renewable energy (solar, wind, and hydro) generation by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

With hydrogen emerging as a key player in energy storage and transportation, Uzbekistan is keen to harness its potential. The country has set targets, aiming for 25% renewable energy generation by 2030 and ultimately achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Bukhara, Republic of Uzbekistan; 29 November 2023: Saudi-listed ACWA Power, the world''s largest private water desalination company, leader in energy transition and first mover into green hydrogen, has broken ground on the first phase of a 3,000 tonne-per-year green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has unveiled an initiative to bolster Uzbekistan''s clean energy ambitions – the establishment of a Green Hydrogen Hub. Green hydrogen, derived from renewable energy resources, is rapidly gaining traction as a versatile and sustainable energy carrier.

The green hydrogen agreement with Uzkimyosanoat is the first project of its kind in Central Asia. The initial phase, valued around US$100 million, will be located in Tashkent region and aims to produce 3,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen for the Uzbek chemicals industry to save up to 20.4 million cubic meters of natural gas annually.

The U.S. partnership with Angola is bringing major investments in transportation, clean energy and other projects that will further connect the southern African nation to the global economy and increase opportunity.

The United States and G7 partners Italy and the European Union are investing in the Lobito Corridor, a trade route that connects Angola’s Atlantic Port of Lobito to Zambia and the the Democratic Republic of the Congo through a new and refurbished railway, and numerous other projects.

The revitalized corridor, part of the U.S. and G7’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI), will spur economic growth through transportation infrastructure, digital connectivity, health resources, clean power and agricultural development projects.

The United States supports efforts to upgrade a port and 800 miles (1,287 kilometers) of the Lobito Atlantic Railway. The railway will transport minerals needed for clean energy production, and will boost regional trade and development by improving access to global markets.

Other U.S. infrastructure initiatives include:

Despite its 40 million hectares of arable farmland, Angola has traditionally imported most of its food. Now with the support of the U.S. and other partners, Angola is poised to become an agricultural hub.

Through the PGI, the U.S. supports efforts of the Carrinho Group, Angola’s largest food producer, to build a reliable local food supply for Angola and the region. Carrinho provides farmers with seeds, fertilizers and money to grow their businesses.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with ExxonMobil, Azule Energy and Grupo Simples, is training rural women in Angola on farming techniques, literacy and other skills needed to secure land rights, access jobs and increase agricultural productivity.

The U.S. has invested in Angola’s public health for decades, contributing significant resources in the fight against HIV/AIDS and malaria. The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) aims to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. To date, PEPFAR has:

The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative has invested $415 million in Angola since 2006. It funds malaria diagnosis and treatment, and also the treated bed nets that protect sleeping Angolans from malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Measures like these already have reduced malaria-caused deaths 29% since 2020.

Selton Miguel, born in Luanda, Angola, is a college basketball star in the United States.

The 6-foot, 4-inch (193.04-centimeter) guard for the University of Maryland admits that, like many Angolan kids, he first played soccer. But when he was around 8 years old, he recalls, "my dad said, ''Why don''t you play basketball?'' because I was getting taller and taller." How tall? By age 10, Selton was almost 6 feet (182.88 centimeters).

Miguel''s educational and basketball journey would take him to Portugal, the U.S. Midwest and then the U.S. South, before he landed in Maryland, just outside of the nation''s capital, Washington.

Miguel has not forgotten Angola — its beautiful beaches and vibrant culture or its residents from many countries. When he thinks of U.S. President Biden''s upcoming visit to his homeland, he says he knows the president will be well received by the "very friendly" people there. The president aims to strengthen the United States’ longstanding engagement with Angola and other African nations, especially in the areas of infrastructure, trade, security and health.

But Miguel kept playing basketball, and he was getting good.

He realized a dream of someday playing in America, when he enrolled in private secondary school in Orlando, Florida. It was not an easy time for him, however. The move to Florida was a big adjustment. "As soon as I got off the plane," Miguel says, "everything was different."

His brother, Rifen, had come to America earlier and encouraged him to work on his English. As Miguel gained proficiency, life got easier. (Today he is fluent in four languages — Portuguese, Spanish, French and English.)

His educational pursuits did not stop his basketball career: By the end of secondary school, Miguel rated among the top 150 college basketball prospects. He decided to play at Kansas State University, having been impressed by its then-coach, Bruce Weber.

The vast plains of the Midwest — which he laughingly describes as "snowing country grass" — brought new challenges. He was starting most of the games for the Wildcats in his first two seasons, but after Coach Weber left the program, Miguel transferred to the University of South Florida for "a new beginning."

In Florida, he was selected the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Sixth Man of the Year, which honors the most talented player who is "first off the bench" after the starting five players, as well as the AAC''s Most Improved Player.
